Caregiver Tips: Prevent Infection & Keep Loved Ones Safe
Caregiving is a demanding responsibility with many challenges; after all, you’re tasked with safeguarding the health and well being of someone you love. Infection is a significant threat to most caregivers, especially when the patient has a catheter or wound. Preventing infection in your home keeps everyone safe and can play a crucial role in avoiding hospital visits.
Practice hand hygiene
Washing your hands may be the most obvious step in preventing infection, but it’s also the most important. Thoroughly wash your hands with liquid soap for at least 20 seconds and rinse with running water.
Use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
PPE is your first defense against the spread of infection. Sometimes gloves, face masks, face shields, goggles or gowns may be required. Follow the CDC guidelines for putting on PPE and dispose of materials properly.
Sanitize surfaces
Maintain a clean environment throughout your home. Regularly clean, sanitize and disinfect (especially patient care equipment) to prevent the spread of germs.
Monitor for symptoms
Look for any signs or symptoms of infection, such as fever, cough, congestion, pain, redness, swelling or nausea. Early detection can help with treatment. Take extra precautions if you suspect your loved one is suffering from an infection.
Keep the patient’s skin clean and moisturized
Keeping skin clean, dry and moisturized helps prevent irritation that could prompt scratching and create an infection. Bathing is especially important when there is an open wound involved. Be sure to change their position frequently to avoid pressure sores if the patient is bedridden. Also, please encourage hydration to help keep the skin from drying out.
